Doshas — the different energies
To briefly recap, Ayurveda is a holistic medical approach, originating from ancient India. According to this medicine, each person is connected by a combination of elements and qualities, called doshas.
There are three doshas, or constitutions, more commonly known by their Sanskrit names: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Present in varying degrees in each individual, these Ayurvedic doshas determine their physical and psychological profile. They also define each person's strengths and weaknesses, which helps to determine the diet and attitudes to maintain for the balance of body and mind, in short, a balance of life.
In Ayurveda, doshas represent the three fundamental energies that maintain health:
Vata
Air and ether: represents the energy of movement.
Pitta
Fire and water: represents the energy of transformation.
Kapha
Water and earth: represents the energy of cohesion.
Each individual has a basic constitution, transmitted by their parents, called Prakriti, and a dominant dosha. The energies of the Doshas can be unbalanced by many factors throughout our lives and therefore tend to influence our sleep, digestion, moods...
