In Ayurveda, traditional and ancient Indian medicine, digestive capacity is called Agni. Meaning fire, lightning in Sanskrit! The function of digestion is essential to life. Indeed, agni transforms food into energy, eliminates toxins and waste, and also nourishes your body, tissues and bones. So how do you revive this digestive fire?

Each dosha has different digestive capacities. If you don't know your dosha, don't hesitate and take our quick test to discover your Ayurvedic profile!

The causes and consequences of impaired agni

Many factors can cause poor digestion. Poor lifestyle and eating habits are the worst enemies of your agni! Our Western lifestyles, influenced by stress and a lack of time, sometimes push us to make bad decisions for our bodies.

Junk food, ready-made meals consumed in large quantities, frozen meals, excess fat and sugar... But also lack of physical activity, alcohol or eating too late at night. All these things are not good for your metabolism. Of course, it's not about eradicating these habits all at once. Rather, it's about reducing them enough so that your body eliminates the toxins created and stimulates digestion again.

Moreover, depending on your dosha, your digestive capacity will be different! Only Pitta people benefit from a strong and regular agni. If you are Kapha, you will have slow digestion, while if you are Vata, it will be very irregular.

The consequences can vary in severity, ranging from simple gas and bloating to chronic fatigue and troublesome constipation!

Therefore, a weak digestive fire, or Agni, causes a pronounced accumulation of Ama (toxins) in the body and manifests through other phenomena such as:

  • A weakened immune system or congested airways
  • Poor, inflamed, or excessively oily skin
  • Strong body odors

Your daily life is often impacted, even if you don't necessarily realize it!

Practical tips to boost your digestion

Take care of your agni and regain energy and comfort by following one or more of these Ayurvedic tips:

  • Start your day with a glass of boiled water; obviously, wait for it to cool down before drinking it. This glass of warm water will help your body cleanse and wake up.
  • Make it a habit to eat at fixed times to allow your body time to digest and feel hungry before the next meal.
  • Take the time to eat in a calm environment, but above all, chew properly so that your body feels satiety.
  • Your meals should be sufficient in quantity to provide the necessary nutrients for proper functioning and consist of good quality, seasonal foods.
  • Eat fiber-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, oilseeds, Agen prunes, etc.
  • In the evening, eat at least 2 hours before bed to digest peacefully before sleeping.
  • Drink enough throughout the day and between meals. After a meal, feel free to drink a spiced, digestive infusion. Our "I live in the present moment" infusion is ideal for soothing you and helping you digest thanks to its carefully selected plants.

The foods you choose are crucial for your digestion! For the well-being of your agni, choose to regularly consume digestive spices such as cumin, fennel, cinnamon, black pepper, turmeric, ginger (preferably fresh), mustard seeds, or coriander… All according to your dosha!

What should be avoided?

Now that you know how to stimulate and aid your digestive fire, you also need to know what to avoid!

  • Do not eat if you are not hungry or if you are experiencing strong emotions! This risks disrupting your body's natural digestion cycles, so no snacking just for indulgence! Enjoy your food, but only when your body is ready to eat. Only fruits can be eaten between meals.
  • Eliminate as many of the following products as possible: sugary products after meals, industrial breads and pastries, sweeteners, carbonated drinks, alcohol, coffee, tobacco, chocolate (except dark chocolate with more than 70% cocoa), meats...
  • Do not mix raw and cooked foods; instead, favor light, hot cooked meals. You now have the main keys to a better digestive fire! Take advantage of these tips to review your lifestyle habits so that they evolve positively!
